Short Curriculum Vitae
Gian Marco Marmoni is currently a Researcher (RTDa) at the Earth Science Department of the Sapienza University of Rome.
In 2014 obtained his master’s degree in Engineering Geology. In 2015 achieved professional qualification as Geologist. In 2018 got a European PhD in Earth Sciences at Sapienza University of Rome with a thesis entitled: “Multiphysical modelling for thermo-mechanical behaviour of rock masses in slope-scale gravitational dynamics” (Advisor Prof. Salvatore Martino). During his PhD, he spent 5 months as a visiting PhD student in the Rock Physics Laboratory of the University of Strasbourg under Prof. Michael Heap's scientific mentoring, where he improved his skills and experience in Rock Mechanics. From 2018 to 2023 was Post-doc Research Fellow in Engineering Geology at the Earth Science Dep. of Sapienza University of Rome. Since 2022 he has achieved the National Scientific qualification as an Associate Professor in the Italian higher education system for the disciplinary field of 04/A3 - Engineering geology, physical geography, and geomorphology.

Research

Research Topics

  • Analysis and monitoring of geological and gravity-induced geomorphological processes of with reference to landslide processes;
  • Landslide susceptibility analysis with statistical and Machine Learning approaches;
  • Definition of earthquake-induced and rainfall-induced instability scenarios;
  • Contact and remote stress-strain monitoring techniques;
  • Infrared Thermography (IRT)

His research topics focus on engineering geology, dealing with numerical modelling of rock block and rock slope instability, landslide susceptibility zoning, and rock mass monitoring, focusing on thermomechanical effects induced by near-surface temperature fluctuations. His research interest includes 2D and 3D thermographic monitoring and 2D Photomonitoring and Photogrammetry. He’s a member of the Italian Catalogue of Earthquake-induced ground effects CEDIT working group and collaborates in the survey of landslide effects triggered by the 2016 seismic sequence in Central Italy.

Membership and Editorial Activity
He’s a Young Member of AIGAA - Italian Association of Engineering Geology and Environment, Associate Editor of the Italian Journal of Engineering Geology and Environment and a member of the CERI research centre for prevision and prevention of Geological Risk. He’s a reviewer of the scientific journal Landslides (Springer), Natural Hazard and Earth System Sciences (EGU), Remote Sensing and Geosciences (MDPI) and the Italian Journal of Geosciences and Italian Journal of Engineering Geology and Environment.

Research Project Leading
2019 - “Analysis of 2D and 3D thermal response of rocks and soils in landslide triggering conditions through site and laboratory experiment” (P.I. Gian Marco Marmoni, PhD)

Research Project participation
Currently, at the DST of the University of Rome Sapienza, he is involved in several national projects by the Ministry of Education and Research (PNRR, PRIN, PNRA on Antarctic Research) or other research institutions and public administrations (e.g., Italian Space Agency, Regione Lazio and Metropolitan City of Rome, Sapienza University Research Projects), as well as European projects (Horizon H2020-RISE STABLE and TRIQUETRA). He's granted by US National Science Foundation and Campus France programmes for international mobility.

Teaching

He’s an assistant professor in the classes of “Engineering Geology”, “Slope Stability” and “Engineering-geological survey and mapping” in the master’s degree courses at the Earth Science Department of the Sapienza University of Rome. He supervised more than 30 master’s and bachelor’s degree theses and co-tutored 5 international Internships.

Papers
He’s the author of more than 20 scientific papers in national and international peer-reviewed journals (WoS and Scopus), more than 15 conference communications (H-Index: 11; Citation: 258; Source SCOPUS, update: 03/04/2023), books and geological guides.
