Born in 1962 in Padova, Italy. PhD in Paleontology at the University of Modena on the Paleogene larger foraminifera of the Maiella carbonate platform (central Italy) in 1990. July-December 1990, Accademia dei Lincei–Royal Society fellowship at the Natural History Museum (London). 1991, postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Basel, Switzerland. 1992-1993, CNR fellowship. University researcher in Paleontology and Paleoecology at La Sapienza University (Rome) from 1994 to 2001. Associate professor at the same university since 2001, teaching paleontology and micropaleontology courses. 
Member of editorial boards of several journals (at present: Bollettino della Società paleontologica italiana and the Journal of Mediterranean Earth Sciences; formerly: Geologica Romana, Journal of the Palaeontological Society of India, Rivista Italiana di Paleontologia e Stratigrafia). 
Head of the MSc in Exploration Geology at La Sapienza University from 2009 to 2012 and from 2016 to 2021.

• 1986: Summa cum laude degree in Natural Sciences at La Sapienza University, Rome.

Research Topics 
Main research interests:

• systematics, paleobiogeography, and paleoecology of Mesozoic and Cenozoic larger foraminifera;
• biostratigraphy and paleoenvironmental analysis of Paleogene carbonate deposits; co-author of the standard Neo-Tethyan larger foraminiferal biozonation (Shallow Benthics Zonation) of the Paleocene and Eocene (Serra-Kiel et al., 1998)
• systematics and ecology of recent benthic foraminifera, with special reference to the Indo-Pacific and Mediterranean domains; 
• systematics of Permian-Jurassic aulacocerid coleoid cephalopods.
